Abstract

The implementation of Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) in urban areas represents a key strategy to strengthen and protect ecosystems and the benefits they provide. This study applies the benefit transfer (BT) method to estimate the Total Economic Value (TEV) of the ecosystem services (ES) delivered by NBS implemented in Valladolid, Liverpool, and Izmir within the framework of the Horizon Europe URBAN GreenUP project. Through a systematic literature review, 75 primary studies were selected, from which monetary values referring to 16 different types of ES were derived and standardized. Results indicate that the annual economic benefits of NBS range between €325,236 and €2,450,863 in Valladolid, €75,162 and €2,132,456 in Liverpool, and €1,147,569 and €3,705,663 in Izmir, with median values of €1,388,050, €1,103,809, and €2,426,616, respectively. In all cities, regulating services (carbon sequestration, air quality improvement, climate regulation) represent the predominant component of the estimated value, while cultural servicesdisplay greater variability. The study confirms the feasibility of the BT approach for the economic valuation of NBS in urban contexts, while highlighting the need to develop harmonized assessment protocols and expand the empirical evidence for ES categories that remain underrepresented.
