Summer School 2026
Evaluating, Simulating and Co-Creating Values for Sustainable Urban Futures
8-10 July 2026, Palazzo Gravina
Department of Architecture (DARC) – via Monteoliveto, 3 – 80134 Naple (Italy)
The QuiVal Summer School, organised within the framework of the Horizon Europe project QuiVal – Quantifying and Modelling the Impact of Cultural Heritage for Sustainable Urban Development (https://quival-research.eu/), will take place in Naples, Italy, from 8 to 10 July 2026, hosted by the Department of Architecture (DiARC) of the University of Naples Federico II.
Bringing together QuiVal PhD candidates, SIEV PhD candidates, early-career researchers, academics, and practitioners from diverse disciplinary backgrounds, the Summer School offers an intensive learning environment focused on innovative approaches to sustainability assessment, participatory
decision-making, and urban regeneration.
The programme combines theoretical lectures, interactive workshops, and stakeholder engagement activities to explore how multidimensional values associated with cultural heritage, environmental resources, socio-economic dynamics and urban transformation can be identified, measured, and
integrated into decision-making processes.
Participants will be introduced to the theoretical foundations and methodological approach of Social Multi-Criteria Evaluation (SMCE) by Giuseppe Munda, Scientific Officer of the European Commission, DG Joint Research Centre, and will engage in hands-on sessions using play SOCRATES, an innovative multi-criteria and multi-actor method that supports collaborative learning, scenario building, and co-creation processes.
A key feature of the Summer School is the interaction with local stakeholders from the San Giovanni a Teduccio neighbourhood, one of the project’s case study areas, providing participants with the opportunity to test participatory methodologies in a real-world context. Through a combination of lectures, simulations, focus groups, and plenary discussions, the Summer School aims to strengthen methodological skills, foster interdisciplinary dialogue, and contribute to the development of new evaluation frameworks capable of supporting more inclusive, sustainable, and value-oriented urban futures.
The initiative reflects the QuiVal project’s core mission of advancing knowledge and tools for understanding and enhancing the multiple values generated by urban regeneration processes, promoting evidence-based and collaborative approaches to sustainable development.
