The current strategies in attaining the mitigation of climate changes are based on a substantial reduction in energy consumption and the promotion of energy efficiency strategies. It is clear that the building sector is highly energy-intensive and has a crucial role in the field of environmental sustainability. Almost half of the total industrialized world energy consumption, and one-third of the greenhouse gases emissions, are due to existing building stocks, where a significant share of properties is energy inefficient and obsolete. However, buildings’ renovation rates are still meagre since the turnover is slow and expensive. As a consequence, existing buildings hold one of the highest responsibilities in worldwide energy waste, but, at the same time, they also embody a significant occasion for energy savings and CO2 reductions. Green buildings, sustainable use of resources (materials, energy and wastes), energy efficiency, triple bottom line, affect the real estate and construction market and therefore, most of the related decision-making processes.
The contribution that the valuation of the economic impacts can give in this field is crucial: interventions, actions, strategies cannot be implemented without considering costs and benefits of these actions, but also social, cultural and environmental effects.
The session welcomes speakers mainly interested in European energy efficiency policy, and economic assessment, bridging discussions from those two macro-areas enables to benchmark and debate the real estate and urban challenges. Papers relevant to the scope of this special session include, but are not limited to, the following areas:
Estimates and economic evaluations for investment projects in the water and energy sectors; sustainable use/optimal allocation of resources (materials, energy and wastes); decision-making criteria assessment, analysis of the costs of the interventions; investment risk analysis, multi-criteria analysis methods; territorial planning on water and/or energy scarcity.
